Josh and Maggie had only been in their comas four days, but Mum and I were already exhausted. It felt like it was one thing on top of another. As I was eating my breakfast Tuesday morning, someone knocked on the front door. As far as I knew, we werenât expecting anyone. I opened the door to find Melanie on our doorstep. Her hair was down, framing her face and drawing your attention to her golden brown eyes. They were further accentuated by teal eyeshadow. She wasnât traditionally pretty like Tessa, but she couldâve been a great model with her unusual look.
âCan we talk?â said Melanie.
I didnât even think she knew where we lived. But, after everything sheâd been through, I couldnât really say no. It wasnât like she had anyone else to talk to about being possessed by a ghost. And after an ordeal like that, having someone to talk to probably helped a lot.
I stepped aside to let her in.
She wasnât at college yesterday. I figured it was because sheâd needed some time to rest. Understandable after everything sheâd been through.
Tilly, who was asleep in the kitchen, ran over and started jumping up at Melanieâs legs as we walked in there.
âSorry,â I said. âTilly!â
âItâs OK,â said Melanie, crouching down and rubbing Tilly behind her ears. Tilly stopped jumping up and sat nicely, enjoying the attention sheâd demanded. âTillyâs a cute name.â
âThanks. Sheâs named after my great aunt Tallulah.â
âCool.â Melanie stood up, shoving her hands into her pockets and rocking on her heels. âIs your mum about? I wanted to talk to you both, if possible.â
âYeah, sheâs just in the greenhouse. Iâll get her. Tea?â I said as I walked past the kettle.
âPlease,â she said, rubbing her hands together. It was freezing outside, and Mum was a lunatic for gardening in that weather. She said she found it relaxing and a mindful way to start the day, so I left her to it.
I put the kettle on, then went to get Mum. She was fiddling with some herbs I didnât know the names of, bobbing her head along to the music playing through her headphones. âMum!â
She jumped, chopped something off a plant, then put her headphones around her neck. âWhatâs up?â
âMelanieâs here.â
âWhy?â
I shrugged. âShe wants to talk to both of us.â
Mum stood up and took her gloves off. âAll right, let me pack this stuff up. Iâll be right in.â
I left her to wrap her gardening up, then went back into the kitchen. Melanie was fussing Tilly.
âYour dog is really cute,â she said.
I smiled. âThanks. Sheâll let you do that all day if youâre not careful.â
She smiled. âI donât mind. We had a dog until last year. He was fifteen when we lost him.â
âSorry to hear that. Losing a dog is always hard when theyâre a part of the family,â I said as I made three cups of tea. âFifteen, though. Thatâs impressive.â
âYeah. He was a good dog. I miss him.â
âAre you going to get another?â
She shrugged. âMy parents donât want to get one with me going to uni soon.
